The photo responsive squaraine dye (PSq) interacts with BSA protein in two distinct ways: noncovalently, yielding a robust NIR emission, and covalently, resulting in a weak green emission. Upon photoirradiation, the green emission of the covalently bound fluorophore is activated via photocleavage of the attached group whereas the NIR emission of the noncovalently bound dye is deactivation.
